 Philosophy and Mission

  • To provide clients with a range of energy therapies that foster growth and wellness while aligning with individual needs and lifestyle.
  • To offer students Reiki teachings in their most original form. To that end, the bulk of my Reiki training, I am a triple Master, has been with teachers who, separately, adhere to the style and philosophy of Usui Reiki Ryoho and the Ethical Standards set by Bronwen and Frans Stiene and the International House of Reiki.
  • To offer affordable and accessible energy healing work and be proactive in making this so.
  • To teach and practice energy therapies with pure intention for the highest and most loving good.
  • To be transparent in teachings as to what is part of and not part of the Reiki system. For example, the chakra system is not part of Reiki, but useful in the practice of energy therapy.
  • Energy is pure chi and cannot be patented or in any way belong to any one individual or school. The techniques to access energy are wide and varied.
  • As a non-religious practice, Reiki and other energy modalities can be utilized to aid healing by balancing the human energy system on the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical levels.
  • Reiki is accessible to everyone, is very simple on the surface, and is a deep intellectual, emotional, and spiritual path.
  • Energy Therapy, including Reiki, is not a substitute for medical care. Paula does not have medical training and does not diagnose or prescribe medical care. None of the information here is intended to be used for the diagnoses, treatment, or cure of any illness or mental or physical medical condition.

About Paula

It is Paula’s greatest desire that all people lead a balanced, fulfilled life. She has found this for herself by focusing on her own spiritual development in combination with the arts and by sharing what she has learned with others. It is her ultimate pleasure that she is able to bring her Reiki experience, her years of teaching, meditation practice, and knowledge of chakra energy together to help make the world a better place.

Her seventeen years of public school teaching in the Visual Arts have given her vast experience with listening to and connecting with people. She brings a warm communication style and professional attitude to her practice that reflects her passion for working with others.

As part of a balanced life, learning and exploration are ongoing. Paula regularly practices meditation and self-treatment to deepen her spiritual connections. She is a firm believer in the idea of 'beginner mind' and loves the opportunity to learn from her students while sharing her expertise.

What Reiki Is

Reiki is a form of energy therapy that works by clearing blockages that cause illness. Reiki helps healing on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. Animals and plants also benefit from Reiki and often show an immediate awareness to the vibration of this loving energy.
Reiki is an energetic, spirit-based, non-religious method of clearing the energy pathways of the body so that we are able to come into balance and ultimately rediscover our true selves. The healing that takes place during an energy treatment is a result of the alignment and clearing of a persons' energy pathways. It is the blockages and disruptions that cause discomfort and illness. This process often produces an awareness of one's connection to universal life force energy.

Rei = Universal, Ki= Life Force Energy

Energy or Ki (Chi)

We know that on the physical level everything in the universe is made of atoms and atoms are energy in the form of mass. There is a finite amount of energy in the universe. Energy is neither created or destroyed, it just changes form. Reiki energy is part of the universe, too, and just like all energy forms, such as lightning, an electrical energy, it seeks to create balance.  Lightning creates a balance when it discharges. There is a build-up of static electricity and the lightning connects with the earth to equalize itself. Reiki is inherently balanced energy that acts upon imbalances by bringing them into alignment. This creates healing on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.
Reiki Energy has always been flowing around us, and many people have a vague or fleeting impression of it. A Reiki Shihan or Teacher is trained to transmit the ability to be a conduit for Reiki to others. After this initiation or attunement, and after we learn how to use Reiki, we have the ability to channel this form of energy that exists in the universe.

"Reiki itself never changes what it is: the energy of everything"

Reiki differs from other energy modalities in that you must receive  attunements, sometimes called initiations or energy exchanges, which are transmissions of Reiki energy through the teacher to you. Having received an attunement, your energy vibration is heightened and you can begin to use life force energy, or ki, to help yourself and others.

Choosing a Reiki Shihan

As a Reiki student, you want to feel confident that you are getting a solid and reliable Reiki training. When looking for a teacher or in Japanese, a Shihan, it is important to know that there are a variety of Reiki philosophies and styles of teaching. A good teacher is one that has a strong self-practice, and is dedicated to the system of Reiki.
There are many branches of Reiki that all stem from the original founder, Mikao Usui, a lay Tendai Buddhist priest who began teaching Reiki in Japan in 1922. In the 1930's Hawayo Takata first brought Reiki to the United States and during the 1970's and 1980's conferred teacher status to twenty-two of her students. From there, Reiki has spread and evolved in the West. A wonderful source of in-depth information on the history of Reiki is The Reiki Sourcebook by Bronwen and Frans Stiene*.

Reiki in Your Daily Life

The more you use Reiki, the more you sense how the energy works for you in your daily life. Reiki helps clear blockages that cause headaches, indigestion, stress, muscle pain, and many, many other conditions. It is also helpful with chronic conditions because it clears the cause, not just the symptom. This is because Reiki works on all levels, emotional, mental, physical, spiritual, past, and present simultaneously. It is not uncommon that conditions such as muscle pain, for example, have an emotional component that you are unaware of. Reiki works because it has its own energetic 'intelligence'. It seeks balance in all things on all levels and creates balance where there is imbalance. By clearing the imbalances you gain access to the health and vitality that is your birthright.

                                             Distance Reiki

Reiki energy does not conform to our conception of time and space, so it is possible to give and receive Reiki from a distance. After completing Level II, or Okuden, you are able to 'send' Reiki to people, situations, or yourself remotely. This is very helpful for future events, emergencies, or to keep the energy flowing after a treatment. Strictly speaking, however, we do not send Reiki energy outside of ourselves. Usui taught that because we are all One, we are already connected. We simply connect with  another person through our intention, doing away with the misconception of separation. With practice, your ability to connect intentionally with others over distances will become strong.

Your Energy Therapy Treatment with Paula
The first session involves a short intake so that I can learn about pre-existing conditions and special concerns. The treatment takes approximately 90 minutes, depending on schedules and goals, and is completely non-invasive.  The cost for this is on a sliding scale, see http://www.reikiarts.net/p/pay-for-appointments-here.html.

During the session you are fully clothed and the treatment takes place on a massage table or chair. The goal is complete relaxation during the session so there are pillows and bolsters for knees, neck and any other spots that like support.
The energy passes through Paulas' hands clearing and creating flow in the energy field inside and around the body. It is not unusual for people to be lulled to sleep during the treatment. Most people feel completely refreshed and centered by the end of a session, or as if they've had a deep meditation. This is at a minimum, see testimonials!

Classes and Attunements

Paula offers trainings for all Reiki levels from Level I to Master Teacher in the style of Bronwen and Frans Stiene and the International House of Reiki. Find more information about this approach to Reiki at www.ihreiki.com.

Reiki is a powerful healing modality and is often used in conjunction with other healing methods. It is not a substitute for medical care from your doctor, however, nor should anyone ever discontinue their prescribed medication.

What is a Reiki Master?

The term 'master' as applied to Reiki is a convention that we in the West have adopted, it is not typically used in Japan, and it has a different meaning depending on who you ask. The definition I adhere to has two main parts.

The first part of being a Master is an ongoing process of individual and collective development. Personal development through meditation is a main focus of the Level I class. In order to heal others, you must first heal yourself. Of course, there isn't any point at which you will finally say, "Hurray, I'm done!" Healing is a process of gaining greater and greater insight into yourself. At a certain point, however, after completing Level I, Shodun, and getting a feel for the energy, you will feel confident in your abilities and sense that you are ready to move on to the next level, Okuden.

The collective development takes the form of coming together with other Reiki professionals. It's natural for professionals in the health fields to come together on a regular basis to exchange ideas, be informed, and give support to each other. There is always so much to learn and share!

The second part of being a Reiki Master is about experience. You definitely cannot be a true Master after a weekend program, it is not an automatic achievement. It takes hundreds of hours of channeling energy to understand the nature of life force energy in action. Reiki gives you the opportunity to develop your intuitive sense, your 'Third Eye' and with that a more profound ability to help others and yourself. You cannot be taught this by someone else and so being a Reiki Master means that you have committed to ongoing development of your energy awareness through meditation, a consistent daily practice, and ongoing professional development.

When I first started with Reiki, I gave free treatments to family and friends. I thought of it as a training period and I needed lots of people to give me a chance to learn. At the beginning I never realized how far Reiki could take me. Now, after years of hands-on experience with a variety of people who have a variety of physical and emotional conditions, I realize how far I have come in gaining a deeper and broader understanding. And I am awed by the beauty and magnitude of how much more there is.

The further you go on the path of energy awareness, the more open you may find yourself to exploring how this beautiful energy impacts your relationships with others and to all of nature. And, in addition to enriching your life and making you a whole person, these connections make you an even better conduit for Original energy, or chi.

How to choose a Reiki teacher and Certification- a general overview

A Master Level is attained after completing a series of classes generally broken into levels 1-3. A Reiki teacher, or Shihan, has done additional study beyond the Master level. The training and experience of the Shihan you choose, as well as course length and content, is obviously very important. Just as in any school, a Reiki student learns as much as the teacher knows and can provide from his or her own experience in the field, from outside readings, or in related fields.

Before I was a Reiki practitioner, I learned how to align and clear the chakras. Since that time, I have developed my intuitive abilities to where I am able to sense energy in a variety of ways in order to clear it effectively. As a former middle school teacher, I know that to be effective in teaching and to thoroughly answer students' questions, you have to know a lot more about your subject than is even in the curriculum.

It is the same in teaching Reiki. So when choosing a practitioner or a course, do your research and don't hesitate to ask about the background of your prospective Reiki Master Teacher or to talk to others who have studied with him or her.

At this time, there is no universal certification or licensing oversight for Reiki teachers or practitioners. There are many people who combine Reiki with other modalities that are licensed, such as massage, but in that case the license is for the other profession and does not guarantee a proficiency in Reiki. There are several online professional organizations that offer practitioners affiliation and marketing opportunities, but they do not differentiate about who signs up with them. There are many umbrella organizations have different philosophies, and that could help in determining your Shihan or the practitioner's approach to Reiki.

Animals and Reiki

Maya and Dooley
Reiki is a universal life force energy. This means that, by nature, everything that is alive recognizes Reiki energy. One of the first things you will notice when you learn Reiki is that your pets will suddenly be very attentive to you. They will recognize the higher vibration and respond by wanting to be with you. Animals LOVE Reiki. They are very open to it even when you are not intentionally connecting to them.
Zoey gets some Rowan Reiki

Sometimes, just like a person, an animal does not need the Reiki energy and they will move away. Be sensitive to their response and try again later if the animal has a condition that needs attention.

You do not need to have your hands directly on the animal's body. Most animals are so sensitive to the energy that they can feel it from across a room or outside across a field. We offer Reiki on the animals' terms, if they move away, we know they've had enough for the time being.

Studies and Articles: The Science

There has been a lot of scientific research on the healing effects of touch therapies. Those of us that use this energy on a daily basis know it works. But as a culture, we want to be able to accurately measure the energy, quantify how it moves between people, and then be able to repeat the results. I have to admit that I would love to see definitive results come out of a lab once and for all so that I could point to them and say, "Look, they finally proved that the healing results we've experienced really work!" Why does science so often lag behind?
